The year 2015 marks the end of the Millennium Development Goal period. And while the global target for drinking-water was met five years ahead of schedule (91% of the world’s population had access to an improved drinking-water source in 2015, compared with 76% in 1990) [WHO], the target for sanitation was missed by nearly 700 million people [WHO/UNICEF 2015 MDG].
As it stands, more than 2.4 billion people do not have access to proper sanitary conditions (with over 1.6 billion living in South-Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa), clean water and knowledge about cleanliness and hygiene. Unhygienic and improper sanitary conditions not only adversely affect human health, and thereby their livelihood, but also reduces life expectancy and leads to premature deaths. Poor toilet conditions also lead to improper disposal of waste, which further pollutes the environment and degrades living conditions.
At the University of York, together with the charity toilettwinning.org, we are simply helping to build toilets in these areas. Donations as low as £60 is enough to provide a loo and latrine to a house in need (typically shared between 6 individuals), and with just £240, a whole school block can get proper toilets! Your donation will not only help in building the toilets, but also in teaching people the importance of cleanliness and hygiene.
